Tips for Getting the Most Out of Summer

Looking for a few ways to make the best of your summer? Here are a few tips for summer health and happiness:

Summer Activities and Hot Weather Can Leave You Dehydrated - Be Sure to HydrateTip #1: Stay hydrated! Water is vital to our body, and in the summer months dehydration is an-all-too-common occurrence. While you’re out and about, be sure to drink more water than you would normally, especially on hot days. Start your hydration early in the day, before you start activities, and you’ll be less likely to experience dehydration, which can lead to heat stroke. Keep you children and pets hydrated, too!

Tip #2: Get outside! Many Americans are deficient in Vitamin D, so get out there and soak it up! Vitamin D is an essential vitamin, and while we can get ~10% from our diet, ~90% comes directly from the sun. Vitamin D is said to help with everything from skin health to bone strength, so be sure to get your daily dose. Just 10 to 15 minutes in the sun can boost your Vitamin D levels.

Summer Activities - Get Active and Move OutdoorsTip #3: While you’re out there soaking up some rays, you might as well have fun! The summer months are great for activities, like running, hiking, walking, biking, surfing, swimming, and a plethora of sports like tennis, golf, football, soccer, basketball, and Frisbee. Just be sure to pay attention to your body. If you’re too hot, take a break and get some water. Keep on top of your hydration and stay cool to avoid heat exhaustion.

Tip #4: Be sure to wear sunscreen while you’re out and about! Talk to your dermatologist for suggestions on what to wear, which chemicals to avoid, and what is best for your activity level. Protecting your skin can help to prevent skin cancer and sunburns. (Nobody likes sunburns!)

Summer Vegetables - a Healthy Diet Can Contribute to a Better SummerTip #5: Enjoy the great produce the summer months provide! Depending on your part of the world, different seasons yield different fruit and vegetables. Check with your local farms and community areas for farmers markets to see what’s in season. Eating healthy can help you to feel more energized, and fresh food tastes great! Try some new recipes and take advantage of your local farmers’ hard work.

Tip #6: Last, but not least, keep up with your overall health, which includes your chiropractic care. Without your health, it’s hard to enjoy the spoils of summer! Maintain your treatments for any pain, and address any new pain that might come up from over-exerting yourself or injuring yourself while doing activities.

Most importantly, have fun!
