Getting Enough Sleep Can Help You Lose Weight

Getting Adequate Sleep Can Positively Affect Your HealthSleep and Weight Loss:

Sometimes, even with eating right and exercising, losing weight can seem like a losing battle. If you’re struggling and not seeing any loss, you might want to look at your sleeping habits. Are you getting the proper amount of sleep each night?

Studies suggest that a lack of sleep can throw off a diet. In a study published by Annals of Internal Medicine titled Insufficient Sleep, Diet, and Obesity, it was found that “[w]hen participants’ sleep was restricted to only 5.5 hours each night, they lost less body fat and more lean body mass than when they slept 8.5 hours—the opposite of what is considered optimal in a calorie-restriction (dieting) program. Participants with restricted sleep also reported feeling more hunger.” (source)

It is thought that having an insufficient amount of sleep can affect the hormones responsible for regulating your hunger, leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is a hormone that notifies your brain that you’re full that that you should stop eating. Ghrelin is a hormone that triggers hunger.  This and other studies have shown that when you are sleep deprived, your body decreases production of leptin, while at the same time increasing levels of ghrelin.

Lack of sleep also appears to affect glucose and fat utilization in your body, as well as your energy metabolism. All of these negative affects can lead to a more difficult weight loss journey.

Sleeping Too Little Can Negatively Affect Your HealthMoral of the story: to avoid feeling tired, low on energy, and hungry all the time, make sure you get at least 6 (if not 8) hours of sleep each night. This will help you to build a healthy routine and habit, and help to regulate hormonal balance.
