Does Drinking Tea Have Any Health Benefits?

Benefits of Drinking Tea - What are the benefits of drinking teaAre there any health benefits of tea? The short answer: Yes.

The long answer:

Tea can provide a few things to the body. If there is caffeine present (as there are many non-caffeinated teas), it is believed to that some antioxidants are ingested, and those provide protection against free radicals.

What is an antioxidant?  From Rice University, “Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage — the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases. The scientific community has begun to unveil some of the mysteries surrounding this topic, and the media has begun whetting our thirst for knowledge.”

And what are free radicals? They are atoms (or groups of atoms) with an odd number of electrons. They can be formed when oxygen interacts with specific molecules. Once created, these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction. They are especially dangerous, as they can inflict significant damage when they react with important cellular components, like DNA or the cell membrane. As a result, cells can function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage, the body utilizes a defense system of antioxidants. (source)

What about other health benefits from tea? Tea contains catechins, which are a type of phenol and antioxidant. From WebMD, “All teas from the Camellia plant are rich in polyphenols, antioxidants that detoxify cell-damaging free radicals in the body. Tea has about eight to 10 times the polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables.” (source)

What does that mean? “Studies of humans, animals, and petri-dish experiments show that tea is high [sic] beneficial to our health. Research suggests that regular tea drinkers — people who drink two cups or more a day — have less heart disease and stroke, lower total and LDL cholesterol, and recover from heart attacks faster. There’s also evidence that tea may help fight ovarian and breast cancers.”

Tea has many beneficial properties, and can be used to prevent illness, curb weight gain, and perhaps even some applicable uses in the treatment and prevention of cancerous cells. Our diets have a direct effect on our health, and what we put in our bodies is very important.
