How to Cure Neck Pain

How to Cure Neck Pain with Chiropractic CareDo you experience neck pain? Many people do. While there may be many causes for your neck pain, there is a course of action that makes the most sense to take to cure neck pain: chiropractic care. It is scientifically proven to be the most effective tool to alleviate neck pain.

According to “Spinal Manipulation, Medication, or Home Exercise With Advice for Acute and Subacute Neck Pain: A Randomized Trial”, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, chiropractic care had a statistically significant advantage over medical treatment, performing better when it comes to neck pain treatment. In the study, researchers randomly allocated 272 patients that expressed acute/sub-acute next pain into three groups with three types of care: chiropractic care, medical care/prescriptions, or home exercises with advice. Treatment was administered for up to 12 weeks, as needed. Results were recorded with multiple assessment tools, including subjective measurements of pain, questionnaires, and objective exams.

At the end of the study, the calculated results showed that while only 13% of patients receiving medical treatment reported a resolution of the neck pain, 32% from the chiropractic group discovered complete relief. Chiropractic care, then, was more than twice as effective as the medical care administered.

Patients in the chiropractic care group received an average of just 6 visits over the 12-week study period. They received treatments including adjustments, which are specific, manual manipulation or movement of restricted segments of the neck and spine. Some also received soft-tissue massages, assisted stretching, and hot/cold packs. The medical treatments group received prescriptions, usually non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and/or acetaminophen.  If those were not helpful, narcotics or muscle-relaxants were also prescribed.

So, what causes neck pain? Neck pain is normally caused by mechanical issues, so  it just makes sense that a mechanical treatment (such as an adjustment) would fare better in alleviating neck pain over a chemically based treatment. In line with that, the self-administered exercises also produced good results with 30% reporting a resolution of neck pain. These exercises, however, were quite rigorous and required that they be performed 6-8 times a day.

With such a commitment of time and energy, it is recommended that a regimen including both exercise and chiropractic care be implemented to reduce and alleviate neck pain. Once an adjustment is performed, immediate results are often noticed. To prolong those positive results, exercise and stretching are recommended to help maintain better neck and spine health.
